LEECHES

* Leeches scientific name is Hirudo medicinalis.
* There are 650 known species of leeches
* Leeches are bloodsuckers but also predators that eat earthworms(nearest relative)
* They can be small and fat to long and skinny
* Largest leech ever found was 18 in.
* Their colors are gray, brown, blackish, and greenish
* One fifth live in sea, while the rest live in streams, lakes, ponds and rivers
* Leeches were used for medical purposes about 1000 B.C. in ancient India. They were used for bloodletting, practice that they believed would cure anything from a headache to gout. Leeches are still used in medical/ surgical procedures now.
* Leeches have 32 brains
* The leech will gorge itself until it has had its fill( 5-10 minutes) and then will fall off
* It can hold up to five times its body weight. If stuck on a person they can just pull them off.
